{"id":271,"date":"2010-04-10T14:27:00","date_gmt":"2010-04-10T14:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/8floz.net\/speedcity\/?p=271"},"modified":"2023-04-10T14:45:19","modified_gmt":"2023-04-10T14:45:19","slug":"bud-winter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/8floz.net\/speedcity\/2010\/04\/10\/bud-winter\/","title":{"rendered":"Bud Winter"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">BIOGRAPHY by Urla Hill<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lloyd \u2018Bud\u2019 Winter<\/strong> architect of \u2018Speed City\u2019 who propelled San Jos\u00e9 State to the pinnacle of track and field during the mid-1900s<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Coach Winter created a legacy not only through his ability to coach, but also through his ability to mentor other coaching hopefuls, and promote the sport of track and field. In all, he would coach 102 All Americans, 27 Olympians, and 49 NCAA and 37 world record holders throughout his career as the Spartans\u2019 coach, which took place between 1940 and 1970. Notable Spartans include sprinters&nbsp;<strong>Ray Norton<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Bob Poynter<\/strong>, ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in the world, respectively, during the late 1950s and 1960; 1968 Olympians&nbsp;<strong>Tommie Smith<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>John Carlos<\/strong>, who placed first and third, respectively, in the 200 meters, and&nbsp;<strong>Lee Evans<\/strong>, who took the gold in the 400, and on the 4\u00d7400 meter relay team;&nbsp;<strong>Ben Tucker<\/strong>, a prominent member of SJSU\u2019s \u201962 and \u201963 NCAA cross country championship teams; Olympian&nbsp;<strong>Willie Steele<\/strong>, who captured the gold in the long jump in \u201948 (He competed at SJS before enlisting in World War II.); and \u201968 Olympic Greek pole vaulter&nbsp;<strong>Christos Papanikolaou<\/strong>, who became the first to vault 18 feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of Winter\u2019s nomination, Poynter noted: Other track and field coaches \u2013 such as Stanford University\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Payton Jordan<\/strong>\u00a0or the University of Oregon\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Bill Bowerman<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 may have received more recognition and acceptance because their programs had great wealth and media support, but Bud was a creative, competitive, fun-loving teacher, who had great passion for the sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/8floz.net\/speedcity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2023\/04\/Bud-Winter-So-You-Want-to-Be-a-Sprinter-600x900-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/8floz.net\/speedcity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2023\/04\/Bud-Winter-So-You-Want-to-Be-a-Sprinter-600x900-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/8floz.net\/speedcity\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2023\/04\/Bud-Winter-So-You-Want-to-Be-a-Sprinter-600x900-1-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI learned how to develop a quality track program on meager resources, how to organize a track team, and build a support group,\u201d said Poynter, who coached Olympians\u00a0<strong>Millard Hampton<\/strong>\u00a0(\u201976) and\u00a0<strong>Andre Phillips<\/strong>\u00a0(\u201988) while at San Jos\u00e9\u2019s Silver Creek High School. \u201cHe taught me that it was important to be a good teacher and to share the knowledge with others. He was a fun-loving coach who made the grueling practices fun, and encouraged all racial and ethnic groups to work together. I have been blessed to have mentored hundreds of athletes with his basic principles.\u201d Poynter also coached sprinters at San Jos\u00e9 City College for six years, and SJS for eight years. He began coaching sprinters at West Valley College upon retirement, and is in his 12<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bud Winter had three children with his wife Helen: Michael, Jane and Kathi.\u00a0<strong>Kathi\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Bert Bonanno,<\/strong>\u00a0his assistant during the mid fifties, recall Winter\u2019s effort in having the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing\u2019s (3M Company) Tartan track placed on SJSC\u2019s campus during the late 1960s. It all started with a \u201ctest strip\u201d laid in the early \u201960s on the infield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI remember him in meetings with 3M and talking about it all the time,\u201d said Kathi, who spoke on her father\u2019s behalf at the induction ceremony when he was inducted into the National Track &amp; Field Hall of Fame in 1985. \u201cHe was so excited about it. I recall dad working on it multiple times, calls that came in at night to discuss the funding and his work with the college.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was invented so the horses could run in the snow and rain,\u201d Bonanno said. \u201cBud thought, \u2018If the horses could run on it, why couldn\u2019t we?\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bonanno, who became an assistant coach for the 1968 Mexican Olympic team with Winter\u2019s assistance, was in Mexico when 3M provided the world with its first artificial turf for Olympic competition. \u201cIt had been red cinder at the Olympic Games up until then. 3M hired\u00a0<strong>Jesse Owens<\/strong>\u00a0to assist them to convince the Mexican Olympic Committee to put that track in,\u201d said Bonanno, whose storied career as coach and athletic director at San Jos\u00e9 City College includes Olympians who either train or attended SJCC from Hampton to\u00a0<strong>Bruce Jenner<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>to<strong>\u00a0John Powell<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Marion Sidler<\/strong>, to\u00a0<strong>Mac Wilkins<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Al\u00a0Feuerbach<\/strong>. Bonanno also coached the Peruvian Olympic team in 1972; and numerous indoor and outdoor teams in countries including Hungary, Scotland, and New Zealand throughout the 1970s, \u201980s and \u201990s; and brought the USA Track &amp; Field Championships to San Jos\u00e9 for the first time in 1984, and then in \u201988.
