History Makers Series: Speed City The Roots & The Legacy

Part of History San José’s “History Makers” series, this panel discussion was held at Barnes & Noble bookstore in conjunction with the “Speed City” exhibit at History Park. Former Mercury News columnist Leigh Weimers facilitates discussion between Yoshihiro Uchida, Ben Tucker, and Urla Hill, about the “Speed City” era of sports at San Jose State College.

The “Speed City: From Civil Rights to Black Power” exhibit focused on the San Jose State College athletic program where numerous student athletes became globally recognized figures as the Civil Rights and Black Power movements reshaped American society. Because of the large number of outstanding athletes in its track and field program, SJSC became synonymous with the name Speed City between 1956 and 1969.
